The Kumbh cycle, and where 2027 fits
Haridwar's next Kumbh is in 2027, and it sits on the same Ganga as Rishikesh. Kumbh is a sacred pilgrimage centred on ritual bathing in the Ganga, spiritual assemblies, akharas, processions, and seva. Its importance comes from the belief that bathing at the right astronomical and lunar moments offers spiritual cleansing, while the gathering also brings together ascetics, teachers, householders, and pilgrims from across India. Haridwar is one of the four traditional Kumbh sites, and the 2027 gathering is being discussed and promoted simply as Kumbh Mela 2027.
The visible heart of Kumbh is the meeting of faith and movement: akhara camps, devotional music, temporary markets, riverside lamps, long pilgrim routes, and processions led by sadhus. Naga sadhus are one of the most recognisable traditions associated with these processions; visitors should observe respectfully, follow photography rules, and never interrupt a ritual or approach a person for a close-up without permission.
Important dates, tithi, and long-weekend planning
Kumbh Mela 2027 runs from 14 January to 20 April 2027, according to published travel schedules. The table below combines the reported bathing calendar with the commonly used Hindu calendar name and a practical weekday note. Planning note: these are reported dates, not yet officially confirmed and not a final government schedule. Confirm bathing windows, road closures, entry rules, and transport controls before paying for non-refundable travel, and check trains on Indian Railways' enquiry site.
For other 2027 travel anchors, Holi falls on 22 March 2027 (Monday), Janmashtami on 25 August 2027 (Wednesday), and Diwali on 29 October 2027 (Friday). Holi creates a natural three-day weekend; Diwali creates another Friday-to-Sunday weekend. These are useful for a wider Uttarakhand itinerary, but they are not part of the reported Kumbh bathing calendar.
What does the last Haridwar Kumbh tell you?
It tells you to expect huge crowds even in a bad year: the 2021 Haridwar Kumbh was shortened and heavily affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Public reports vary by counting method: official and tourism summaries cite roughly 9.1 million visits over the wider period, while contemporaneous reports also described around 7 million devotees for the curtailed event. That scale matters for planning: even a reduced Kumbh created intense pressure on roads, rail, ghats, accommodation, health services, and crowd management. The 2021 figures should be treated as context, not a forecast for 2027.
Why does Rishikesh make sense as a base?
Because it is about 25 km away and much calmer. A Kumbh Mela draws enormous crowds, while Rishikesh offers a calmer place to sleep, recover, and continue a wider Garhwal itinerary. Staying here also lets you pair the Haridwar visit with yoga, river walks, rafting when in season, and routes north toward Kedarnath and the Char Dham.
Before the main snan
Stay in Rishikesh, visit Triveni Ghat or Har Ki Pauri on a quieter day, and confirm the latest official traffic plan before travelling into Haridwar.
On a major bathing day
Leave with a buffer, carry ID and water, expect controlled movement, and follow police, mela, akhara, and ghat instructions. Do not plan a tight same-day onward connection.
After the crowds
Use Rishikesh as a decompression stop before yoga, rafting, Rajaji, or a longer Garhwal route. This is the easiest way to make the pilgrimage part of a balanced trip.
How do Rishikesh and Haridwar compare?
Haridwar is the ritual town, Rishikesh the yoga-and-river town: the two share the Ganga but feel different. Haridwar is older and more ritual-dense — its Ganga Aarti at Har Ki Pauri, run by hereditary priest families at the Brahma Kund, is louder and more traditional than Rishikesh's own aarti at Parmarth Niketan. Rishikesh blends that same river spirituality with yoga, wellness, and adventure tourism. Read more in our About Rishikesh guide.
Where should you stay for the Kumbh 2027?
Pick your base by how you want the day to feel. For the main snans, stay within walking distance of the ghat you plan to bathe at: roads around Har Ki Pauri close to vehicles on the big days, so a simple room you can walk from beats a grand hotel you can't drive out of. For calmer nights, Kankhal, Bhupatwala and Shantikunj are short rides from the ghats, and Rishikesh is about 25 km upriver.
